How to Choose a POS Machine in the UAE
The questions to ask before picking a POS provider — settlement speed, contactless support, and what the paperwork actually involves.
Every POS provider in the UAE will tell you their rates are the best and their setup is the fastest. Cutting through that requires asking a handful of specific questions rather than comparing headline rates alone.
1. What does settlement actually look like?
Ask exactly when money from a sale lands in your account — not the marketing answer, the real one. Some partners settle next business day; others run on a standard multi-day cycle. If cash flow is tight, this single answer can matter more than a slightly better rate.
2. Which payment methods does the terminal actually accept?
Cards are table stakes. Confirm contactless tap-to-pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and — if relevant to your customer base — Samsung Pay are all supported on the specific terminal model you'll receive, not just "available on request."
3. Who handles the merchant application paperwork?
A POS application in the UAE typically requires trade license documents, bank details, and business information submitted to the acquiring partner. Ask whether the provider prepares and submits this for you, or whether you're expected to navigate it yourself.
4. What happens when something goes wrong?
A terminal that stops working during a busy Saturday is a real cost. Ask whether support means a dedicated relationship manager who picks up the phone, or a generic ticket queue with a multi-day response time.
5. Can pricing improve as you grow?
Rates are usually tied to volume and average transaction size. A provider working across multiple licensed partners can re-match you to better terms as your business scales, rather than leaving you locked into the rate you signed up with on day one.
